WestGAP Advice Service Closing

WestGAP Advice Service Closing

We are sorry to announce that we will be closing our Tuesday advice service from February 26th onward. This has been a very difficult decision and one that we have not taken lightly. We are all too aware of the increased need for the support of professional advisers to navigate an ever more hostile benefit system.

Sadly WestGAP, as an entirely volunteer-run organisation simply does not have enough fully-trained advisers with the necessary availability to run a reliable advice service. We have been overstretched for some time now, and ultimately, our reduced capacity could be seen as yet another negative side effect of austerity.

That being said we would like to emphasise that we in no way see this as the end of WestGAP.

In fact, we feel strongly that there are other effective ways to fight austerity and to support and empower people experiencing poverty. We have been discussing ways we can build a stronger, more democratic and inclusive organisation, that isn’t reliant on a few voluntary advisers having all the knowledge. We are organising regular strategy meetings about this, discussing ideas like accompanying people to interviews and assessments, holding info-stalls, organising campaigns, and doing more events in the local community.

To all our regular clients: We know you have come to rely on our service, and we will do everything we can to help you find alternative, trustworthy and reliable advice services.

Get Involved

WestGAP is changing and evolving, and we would like for you to be involved. Please keep checking our website, facebook for announcements, or send us an email if you want to be kept informed / have questions.

We will also be keeping the office open on a Tuesday till the end of March, for anyone who wants to come along for a chat, to pick up foodbank vouchers, or find out about other local advice services they can go to.

Thanks everyone for your support so far.
